The world of construction is changing fast with new and innovative ways to finance, procure, design, engineer, produce, and maintain built facilities. The boom and bust cycles are an inevitable part of the international construction landscape and organizations will have to adapt to such challenges. Sustainability, safety and health, environmental protection, climate change, the skills shortage, and the rapid advance of information and communication technologies are all impacting business. Companies must cope with inflationary pressures on their prices and seek new and more efficient ways of delivering projects for clients who have higher expectations.
Nobody is immune from change. To succeed and grow companies must increasingly compete in an international arena. Companies face new competition from foreign competitors entering their domestic market, while new markets are opened up overseas. Increasingly, companies need to consider how they can gain competitive advantage by harnessing new technology, sharing ideas, and using research to develop better ways of delivering projects and improving profitability in the sector.
The establishment of the Global Network for International Construction (GloNIC) aims to enhance knowledge and sharing in the field of international construction, and facilitate knowledge transfer across the industry. The aim is to have a forum where ideas, knowledge, information, and experiences are shared openly to improve the performance, productivity, and profitability of the sector. The academic community can develop new approaches to help and support the sector by delivering research and teaching programmes that are relevant and helpful for today and the future.
The GloNIC has made a positive start. The members have undertaken a series of collaborative activities including joint research, sharing of information, and exchange of staff. The first international workshop of the GloNIC was held in Beijing in October 2007. The two-day meeting was attended by researchers and practitioners from Australia; China; Hong Kong, SAR; South Korea; Malaysia; Singapore; Sweden and the United Kingdom. The conclusions which were reached at that meeting set the agenda for further collaboration.
